Maui Digital Imaging is proud to print fine art reproductions for Kirk Boes, a Maui-based contemporary painter whose life and work have been shaped by West Maui for more than five decades. Born in Newport Beach, California, he moved to Maui as a teenager and developed a lasting connection to the island's landscape, culture, and artistic community.
Before making painting his primary professional focus, Boes worked for many years in education and arts administration, including leadership roles with community arts organizations in Lahaina. He studied at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and has kept a long-standing interest in art history, especially Impressionist and post-Impressionist painting. He has sustained an active studio practice since the 1990s, and over the past fifteen years painting has become the center of his professional life, with his work exhibited and collected in Hawaiʻi.
The August 2023 Lahaina fire destroyed his home and studio along with much of the town that had shaped him. His work since the fire carries that experience forward without abandoning the concerns that have defined his practice for decades. His current paintings remain rooted in place while exploring the emotional, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of human experience.
